What Happens in Vegas is a comedy waiting to happen. It takes an old premise (drunk strangers regretting their decision to get married in Las Vegas) and adds in a dilemma (a $3 million slot machine win) that could've been easily resolved. But then again, there would've been no movie if the unhappily wedded couple figured out that splitting the money in half and getting their marriage annulled would've been quick and effective. Cameron Diaz plays uptight clean-freak Joy, who has just been dumped by her fiance. Ashton Kutcher is Jack, a slacker furniture maker who has been fired--by his own dad. Each goes to Vegas to let off some steam. And while they have nothing in common (except being exceptionally good looking) they make out, get married, and fight over the money Jack wins with Joy's quarter. Instead of letting the couple get divorced, a judge sentences the odd couple to half a year of marriage. What happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas, but extends into New York where Jack and Joy live. Both actors have fared well in comedies, especially Diaz in
My Best Friend's Wedding. And while Kutcher still has to live down
Dude, Where's My Car?, he showed a lot of comedic flair and charm in
A Lot Like Love. But the two face an uphill battle here with inane dialogue and a premise that not only is unbelievable, but unlikeable. The two are so incompatible (and immature) they can't even control bathroom time and, in Jack's case, his bladder. --

| Response to Chapman's criticism of JAdams review | 2010-07-17 | 1 / 5 |

J Adams may not believe that your comments are worth a response, but I can't resist. Your correct in your self-description of a lack of mental capacity. I assume that not liking this particular film means that the viewer has no sense of 'humor'? Wake up! This film was a box office flop, which according to you logic would mean that most of America has no sense of humor. Wrong, we're just tired of seeing the same stupid plot with same stupid jokes. And we are tired of Hollywood assuming that the public consists of 15yr old boys who can only understand bathroom humor. Stupidity does not always equal funny. My friends have funnier conversations and it doesn't cost $15. I don't need to throw away money to watch actors being paid millions just to remake their last comedy (and I use that term loosely). I can turn on cable TV any time of the day and never fail to find another version of this film. And if you haven't noticed, Kutcher plays only 1 character and replays the same unfunny jokes each time. The comment to see "Honeymoon in Vegas" is on the mark. At least that film was smart snd funny. In "What Happens.." it's like they wrote the script in 5 minutes after viewing Kutcher's other films. If you think 'elite' is expecting an actual plot and humor, then I guess most Americans are 'elitists'. I just hate leaving the theater thinking "thats 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back".
If you want to laugh at the silly or slapstick throw in a copy of "Duck Soup" |

| I rarely will even approach anything with Ashton Kutcher connected with it, but this movie is one of those rare exceptions. My wife and I stumbled onto this movie on cable, and we both laughed our collective *** off, which is even more telling, since we have such divergent senses of humor. As someone above noted, the real stars are the supporting cast - the interaction between his lawyer and her best friend was priceless. The dialog was extremely well written and witty - the casting was eclectic yet dead on - Dennis Miller, Queen Latifah and, of course, Dennis Farina as Dick Banger - even that sychophantic floor trader who's always trying to stab Cameron Diaz in the back (and her wimp husband). If you've never seen the movie, the title of this review will make no sense whatsoever; however, once you do watch it, you will never forget it. In fact "YOU know why.." has become a much used phrase between my wife and I. Just good clean entertainment with a hint of naughty. |

| This is one of those movies that should be so stupid and predictable that it's a real dud, but somehow it's not. As many reviewers have pointed out, the plot is somewhat typical, contrived and raunchy at points, especially near the beginning. I think what saves the movie is two things. First of all, there is some good acting by a number of actors that do well with their parts. None of the performances are over the top but many are quirky and memorable. Second, although a movie like this has many opportunities to become ridiculous or have scenes that are beyond believable, this one seems to stop short of that. Just when you cringe and think you can see a typical silly scene coming, the movie stops short. The result is a fairly funny movie that also has some heart to it. I'm not sure the love-hate-love sequence is completely believable but it does provide for some alternately funny then touching scenes. Somehow in the end I came away liking the movie and feeling like I could easily watch it again in the future. It probably won't be remembered as one of the top romantic comedies of all time, but it will find a place in my collection. |

| I saw this film a year or so ago while visiting family/friends...it was so funny -- it was a must purchase, and has the same hilarious effect when viewing again, and again. |
